Effective storage management is a constant
balancing act. Your most critical data needs
to be stored on fast, high-powered devices
where your customers, employees, and partners
can access it quickly. But as information
ages and becomes less critical, you need
to move it to lower-cost secondary storage
devices--and eventually to longer-term archive
systems. Managing this complicated process
can be difficult--and the failure to effectively
manage the lifecycle of your data can quickly
send storage costs spiraling out of control.

Disk
Backup & Virtual Tape
Organizations of all sizes are faced with
the challenge of protecting increasing amounts
of critical data from loss. Traditional
backup methods using tape alone often can
no longer meet this challenge, requiring
many IT managers to search for new techniques.
The search for more capable strategies is
primarily due to the risk of unacceptably
long periods of down time in cases where
individual files and directories need to
be quickly restored. Users find that the
use of disk devices can significantly speed
up and simplify the recovery task. While
disk-based solutions are rapidly emerging
as the preferred strategy for backup and
recovery, the use of tape for data archiving
is also growing rapidly in businesses that
need to comply with government regulations
that mandate specific data retention requirements.
As a result, industry experts now recommend
data protection "best practices"
that combine the advantages of disk with
those of tape - by using disk as the first
stage of data protection and tape for longer
term data archiving. This technique has
been given the general name of disk-to-disk-to-tape,
or D2D2T. Although specific implementations
vary widely, there are two basic approaches
for implementing Disk-Based Backup in a
D2D2T environment: Use the disk configured
as a virtual tape library (VTL) and/or as
standalone virtual tape drives. This enables
the disk to be easily managed by popular
backup software similar to the way physical
tape is managed (without changes to existing
backup policies), followed by duplication
of some virtual tapes to physical tape or
as a secondary disk device, configured as
disk volumes (LUNs) and often referred to

Continuous
Data Protection (CDP)
Businesses face a difficult task of protecting
their corporate data, and although most
companies have implemented solutions for
protecting their enterprise data, laptops
and workstations are often unprotected.
Lost data significantly impacts productivity
and creates downtime. USI’s Continuous
Data Protection (CDP) solutions enable a
company to protect data residing on laptops
and workstations, with little or no IT involvement.
CDP provides real-time, invisible file replication.
It continuously protects important files.
No scheduling is required. No tapes are
required. When a file is saved, a copy is
automatically stored on local disk. A second
copy can be automatically sent to a file
server or Network Attached Storage (NAS).
A third copy can be automatically sent to
a server. With CDP, files are backed up
the moment they are saved in real time and
multiple versions can be stored, backup
times are reduced or eliminated, data loss
is reduced, and easy restores improve productivity.
USI’s CDP file vault retains data
files for pre-defined lengths of time. It
is easy to configure without a user interface,
provides write protection, and cannot be
modified or deleted once a file is vaulted.
